India : My job is Xlored !
Yesterday, I happen to visit the dark, bad and happening alley of St Louis.. don’t ask where .. I wouldn’t know. ;) ...
On the Dark side of town, I met a drunken White!
He was a student of International Affairs; born and brought up in Saint Louis. His world had been the US of A, or perhaps just Saint Louis. I was little surprised to know that he had heard of Outsourcing and India. However, the perspective of India he presented was a unique experience. I was incident to a mix of emotions --- hatred, fear, awe, & perhaps a little perplexed. Our brief meet of around fifteen minutes showed me a bigger picture of how Saint Louis, if I may generalize, perceives India. I wouldn’t like to generalize to the US as I have seen little of it yet.
This young lad, Thomas, must be in his late teens. I say this coz I did see root beer on him. He had an Indian roommate, whom he described as very clever, hardworking and focused student. At one stage, he wondered how a person can be that dedicated. At other moment, in his words, he was frustrated with him coz he believed some day this Indian friend of his, traveling miles away from his home, his family and living alone in a different world; will in fact beat the home grown boy in the competition of getting a good job. He feared! He was angry at other times as well! He was confused with the state of affairs his government was adopting with respect to globalization and outsourcing. He admired his roommate, an Indian, for being dedicated. Also wondered what drew so much passion and commitment and dedication in Indians. The big question on him was -- why does India have to take jobs of US!!
Knock Knock ..... My friends were done with their stuff and it was time to leave for home. I couldn’t leave this chap, with so many questions and moreover dislike, to say the least, for the country I love so much.
I took a pause. I knew I wouldn’t do justice to the topic in the few moments at hand. Nevertheless, I tried to give my best shot. I told him, "The picture you see of India is just one side of the coin. It’s just the world around you which has been presented in front of you. To see the other side of the coin, you must feel India, visit India. To quote one example, 20 million children die of malnutrition every year. Would u see this in US? No, right! There are many such things which you as International affairs student should explore to see the real India. What you see here remotely resembles India. Well, my friends waiting. All the best.. bbye".
My way, back and beyond, thoughts filled my mind as I began collating the lints from the short conversation. At one moment, my heart was full of pride for India being the center stage in the mind of lot of people. At other time, I started thinking of this lad's emotions of fear.. And at yet another time, I knew that this face of India is nothing more than a rubber mask, hiding all the scars within.
This face of India, though artificially beautified, is drawing lot of attention from the world. Money is coming in. And even a jack can tell money talks. The money coming in, assuming bureaucrats will eat their part is still lot for India to grow Big. Where will do much money go? It has too seep in; at least to some extent. All in all, the standard of living of aam aadmi goes up. People below poverty line go down; else the poverty line goes up its current standard! ;-)
Today, even a farmer seeing the dawn shining for Information Technology is investing into his child's education. Now, even more are bound to invest. Literacy goes up. Qualified individuals vouching for white collar jobs in GenNext go up in a big way. With FIIs pouring in money, market and industry has lot of money to invest. Investment will result in growth and hence more jobs for tomorrow, for GenNext. More jobs, means perhaps nobody will sleep hungry. So, perhaps, that day the news "20 million children die of malnutrition every year" will only be the thing of the past. May India carry the world with it and all world be a better world to live, so no lad in India says "My job's Xlored !".
A man's karma is to forever turn the wheel of life towards a better future for all. Dream on...

The title 'SQUINT' doesnt really suit your content :)
I'd say, the driving energy behind all dedication, focus, determination, thinking, hard work, intelligence, imagination... (The list is endless) is, necessity. India and its people are at a stage where they are exposed to high life, money and achievements. It is definately within reach of a lad (From India ofcoarse), after all the bashings he got for not standing rank one in class 5.
Bottomline, the difference between two types of lads you saw was, UPBRINGING. That word is going to change the way america lives.
